Teachers, We Thank You!
We often hear, “Teaching is one of the most thankless jobs.”
Teachers often bear the burden for student’s poor academic performance, lack of student motivation, repeated disruption in the classrooms, and more.
In the school year 2021-2022, it has been reported that 10% of educators left their jobs.
Teacher Burnout
Teachers are experiencing ‘teacher burnout’. This is a condition when an educator has exhausted the personal and professional resources necessary to do the job.
Reasons for teacher burnout include heavy workloads, staff shortages, low salaries. They may also include mental health, fears for safety. Politics and leadership were also reasons for teacher burnout.
What Can Teachers Do?
Teachers can practice self-care. This may include taking time off, using their PTO times.
Teachers can set boundaries. Knowing when ‘enough is enough’, also knowing how to say “No”.
While the heart of a compassionate teacher is huge, setting boundaries is a must.
What Can We Do?
We can show our appreciation to teachers. Sending Thank You cards to the school with our students can brighten their day.
The children at GBOC have written personal notes to their ‘favorite teachers’.
They didn’t stop there the students were asked to write a thank you note to a teacher that was perhaps not their favorite.
It was comical to see their faces when challenged to do so. This challenge opened up to great dialogue as to why the teachers were not their favorite.
They were then challenged to see things from a teacher’s point of view. We saw a slight change in their perspective.
Let Us Be Reminded
During this holiday season, let us be mindful of the importance teachers play in the lives of our children.
We can share our appreciation for them by volunteering to help during class time, donating additional school supplies, or give gift cards.
When we take time to think and realize that teachers help to shape the lives of our children, it's worth the investment.
If you are a teacher, please know that the staff at GBOC and the children appreciate and value you.
If you know a teacher please forward this blog to them.
